I think it is a young juvenile. I wasn't sure if its a young female or possibly getting more feathers and possibly a male lol. It was with the mother and stood out so bright.Really bright red. I don't usually see such bright females.
on occasion I have seen young ones, the males sometimes are orange when they start to get their feathers. seeing two today though surprised me. I have seen the male feed the young before and I usually do see my cardinals in pairs just the male and female but if they are nesting I might only see one at a time. this one was going to the feeder though and finding his own food though , and I didn't realize they had chicks so it really surprised me lol.I have to see if their are more or just this one, he stood out though. I have to keep track of if he molts.
He really is. I can't tell if he is a young she or if he is still growing, but the bright feathers have me convinced he might change. I have a few shots of him with his mother, but only one is clear in the shot. It was neat to see two because they are territorial and chase each other if there are more than one in the area so only chicks and their parents are what you usually see together.
He really stands out,I just have a feeling he is boy but even if its a girl lol its still pretty. The mother didn't seem as vibrant as this one. he just kept coming back to eat, lol usually these birds are really very cautious I can tell he is young since I did get some close shots lol.
